The UK Minister for Africa Visits Trinity Metals Nyakabingo Mining Company

The UK Minister of State for Africa, Lord Collins, visited Trinity Metals Nyakabingo Mining Company on September 6, 2024, to assess Trinity Metals Group’s performance as a UK company in the mine.

Lord Collins was accompanied by the British High Commissioner to Rwanda, Alison Thorpe, and the Chief Executive Officer of Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB), Francis Kamanzi.

They discussed the mine’s operations, including worker living conditions, the increasing number of women employed, and the overall productivity of Trinity Metals Nyakabingo. They were told that the Rwanda Extractive Industry Workers Union (REWU) is instrumental in the mine’s development, providing support and programs to enhance worker and employer satisfaction.

During an event, RMB’s CEO, Francis Kamanzi, partnered with Lord Collins to inaugurate Umurage Decline, a tunnel aimed at increasing the production of the mine.

Peter Geleta, the Chief Executive Officer of Trinity Metals Group, expressed gratitude for visits from the new UK High Commissioner, Alison Thorpe, UK Minister for Africa, Lord Collins, and RMB CEO, Honorable Kamanzi.

He announced that the visitors were positive and the CEO of the RMB officially opened a new decline in BV22, extending the mine’s life and creating many new jobs. The new depth will be from level 22 to 26, potentially further deepening the mine.

Geleta emphasized the importance of senior officials in fostering motivation and pride among the people of Trinity, particularly in Nyakabingo, who are proud of their progress in building a world-class mine.

He said, “We always like to have officials, but officials at this level are very important to us. It’s very important to our people because they get very encouraged when they see the senior people coming to visit us. It’s a motivation. We’re also proud to showcase and show these visitors all the good things that Trinity is doing, and at Nyakabingo, we’re very proud of the progress we’re making to build a world-class mine.”

Trinity Metals Nyakabingo’s General Manager, James MUDAHUNGA, emphasized the importance of the Umurage Decline’s official inauguration, citing its potential to increase production due to the presence of numerous minerals and facilitate higher tunnel digging.

He expressed gratitude for the UK’s visit and RMB’s CEO’s visit, stating it boosts motivation and trust among employees, fostering a positive work environment.

He said, “We were pleased to be visited by the UK, they’re our friends, and they are investors who can mobilize their relatives to come and invest in our country; it is very good. Then the CEO of RMB also visited us; it is very valuable; it gives us energy to work hard, and the employees see that we are trustworthy.”

Mudahunga emphasized the importance of guests visiting the company, as they are not just visiting the company but rather observing its activities.
