By Iradukunda Isabelle
Paxpress in partnership with Africa Check, recently conducted a training session for journalists on how to verify rumors through photos and videos. The organization emphasized the importance of fact-checking before reporting news to prevent the spread of false information on social media platforms.
Coordinator of Paxpress, Albert B. Twizeyimana, highlighted the significance of professional journalism and stressed that journalists who publish rumors are damaging their careers. Twizeyimana encouraged reporters to prioritize fact-checking and publish factual stories instead of rumors.
Journalist Ines Nyinawumuntu acknowledged the challenges journalists face in conducting thorough fact-checking due to time constraints imposed by media houses. She emphasized the need for proper proofreading to avoid spreading rumors and suggested that reporters communicate with their managers to address these issues.
Furthermore, Eugene Hagabimana, a lecturer at the University of Rwanda, emphasized the importance of continuous learning and training to navigate the evolving landscape of information on the internet. He highlighted the need for individuals to critically assess the credibility of information online and avoid falling for false narratives.
Hagabimana also pointed out that a significant portion of time spent on social media is often dedicated to non-essential activities, underscoring the importance of using digital platforms responsibly. He emphasized the role of journalists in shaping public perceptions and urged them to prioritize accuracy and truth in their reporting.
