Umwalimu SACCO and WIFR Collaboration: A Step Towards Gender Equality and Financial Empowerment
The collaboration between Umwalimu SACCO and Women in Finance Rwanda (WIFR) marks a positive step towards empowering women in the financial sector in Rwanda. By coming together to provide trainings and share ideas, these organizations are working towards creating a more inclusive and equal workplace for women.
During the event hosted by WIFR on September 24, 2024, Umwalimu SACCO’s CEO, Laurence Uwambaje, emphasized the importance of upholding principles of equality and fairness within the cooperative. By ensuring equal opportunities for all employees, regardless of gender, Umwalimu SACCO is setting a strong example for other financial institutions in the country.
Established in 2006 and licensed by the National Bank of Rwanda in 2008, Umwalimu SACCO has grown to over 120,000 members and operates more than 30 branches nationwide. This growth is a testament to the cooperative’s commitment to providing financial services to a wide range of individuals, including women working in the education sector.
Raissa Muyango, CEO of Copedu Plc and a founder of WIFR, highlighted the significance of this partnership in advancing Rwanda’s goal of becoming a financial services hub in Africa. By welcoming Umwalimu SACCO into the fold, WIFR is ensuring that women in the education sector have easier access to financial services and opportunities for professional development.
As part of the women’s support program, three employees of Umwalimu SACCO were awarded scholarships to pursue further education in finance at the Chartered Institute for Securities. This initiative not only invests in the professional growth of these individuals but also contributes to building a more diverse and skilled workforce in the financial sector.
By working together, these organizations are paving the way for a more inclusive and successful future for women in the financial sector.
