Residents of Nkungu Sector in Rusizi District Show Commitment to Conservation Efforts in Nyungwe National Park

The comments by 22 families from the Nkungu Sector in Rusizi District to further preserve the Nyungwe National Park is a positive step towards sustainable conservation efforts in Rwanda. Through the program of sharing income from tourism, these families have recognized the benefits they receive from the park and are determined to protect it for future generations.

The initiative to house 10 displaced families in specially built homes within the park is a commendable effort by the Rusizi District and the Nyungwe Management Company. By providing shelter to those in need, the government has shown compassion and support for marginalized communities, helping to remove the stigma and isolation they once faced.

The testimonies of individuals like Nyirahagenimana Francine and Nyiranzabahimana Alvera highlight the transformative impact of this program on their lives. From being chased out of mud houses to finding peace and stability in new homes, these families are grateful for the opportunities provided to them through the tourism revenue-sharing scheme.

Ntihemuka Pierre’s emphasis on the importance of community involvement in park management underscores the interconnected relationship between conservation efforts and local residents. By ensuring that both the park and its surrounding communities thrive, a sustainable balance can be achieved for the benefit of all.

The call by Vice Mayor Habimana Alfred for residents to take care of their new homes and belongings is a reminder of the collective responsibility we all share in preserving our natural resources. The provision of essential supplies to these families demonstrates a commitment to their well-being and integration into the broader conservation efforts.

As we celebrate this positive development for  Nyungwe National Park, it is important to recognize the ongoing challenges and complexities involved in conservation work. Continued support and engagement from both government institutions and local communities will be crucial in ensuring the long-term success of these efforts.

By working together towards a common goal, we can create a more sustainable future for all.
