Rwanda Calls for Action on Climate Change Vulnerability
At the Second Kigali Climate Talks held in Kigali, the Deputy Director General of the Rwanda Environment Management Authority, Munyazikwiye Faustin highlighted the vulnerability of different regions in the country to climate change. According to the vulnerability report conducted at the end of the EDPRS 2, the western province was found to be highly vulnerable with a 0.5 index, out of a maximum of 1.
The report also divided the country into regions prone to drought and regions prone to floods and landslides. The eastern and southeastern parts were identified as prone to drought, while the western and northern parts were identified as prone to floods and landslides.
Munyazikwiye emphasized the importance of using this data to mobilize climate finance and make informed decisions. By aligning efforts and programs with the vulnerabilities identified in the reports, decision-makers can better address the specific needs of each region.
As Rwanda plans for the next five years, it is crucial to prioritize actions based on the vulnerability assessments. This includes monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of investments in addressing climate change issues.
The Deputy Director General called for a united effort to combat climate change and ensure the sustainability of Rwanda’s environment for future generations.
