President of the Republic of Rwanda Paul Kagame and Mrs. Jeannette Kagame arrived in Ankara, Turkey on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, for a two-day working visit aimed at further strengthening cooperation between the two countries in various fields. President Kagame is scheduled to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Thursday for closed-door talks, followed by meetings with delegations from both countries. Both Heads of State are expected to deliver messages and hold a press conference.

During their visit, President Kagame and Mrs. Jeannette Kagame will also pay a visit to the Anıtkabir Memorial Tomb, where the First President and founder of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, is buried. They will be hosted for an evening meal as a tribute to the Heads of State. Rwanda and Turkey have a close relationship that has produced tangible results, particularly in development activities.

The two countries have signed 21 cooperation agreements in areas such as general cooperation, culture, science, technology, and innovation. They have committed to increasing trade and investment for the benefit of their citizens. Turkish companies have played a significant role in Rwanda’s infrastructure projects, such as the Kigali Convention Centre, BK Arena, and the renovation of the Amahoro Stadium.

President Kagame highlighted the impressive increase in trade between the two countries in recent years and emphasized the need to set targets to reach a trade volume worth one billion US dollars per year in the future. Rwanda’s exports to Turkey have seen a substantial increase from US$31 million in 2019 to US$178 million in 2022.

Rwanda continues to attract prominent Turkish investors, including billionaire Ferit Şahenk, who plans to launch various investment projects in Rwanda. One of Şahenk’s companies, Doğuş Group, intends to contribute significantly to the hotel and hospitality sector by building three luxury hotels in different regions of Rwanda.
