Rwanda Leads Africa in Green Growth and Climate Resilience,-Katerina Syngellakis

Rwanda is emerging as a beacon of sustainable development in Africa, showcasing innovative strategies to integrate climate resilience with economic growth. The country’s comprehensive approach, supported by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), highlights how ambitious urban planning, conservation, and circular economy initiatives can drive green prosperity.

In an interview with CNBC Africa, Katerina Syngellakis, GGGI’s Regional Director for Africa, praised Rwanda’s strides in green urban development and carbon markets. “Rwanda has done a lot of work in greening cities and urban development, not just in Kigali but across secondary cities as well,” she noted. Initiatives include investments in urban wetlands, conservation of protected parks, and the promotion of green tourism—all contributing to a vibrant, climate-resilient economy.

Rwanda’s leadership extends to pioneering carbon market readiness. The country is among the few African nations establishing the legal and institutional frameworks necessary to participate in international carbon trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. GGGI supports Rwanda’s efforts in raising awareness among government agencies, developing policies, and creating a pipeline of climate projects that can generate carbon credits and attract green investments.

In addition to carbon markets, Rwanda is making significant progress in circular economy practices, particularly in waste management and urban mobility. A new waste sorting and recycling facility in Kigali exemplifies how resource management can create jobs, reduce environmental impact, and foster youth-led industries.

Syngellakis emphasized Rwanda’s holistic approach: “The integrated efforts in urban development, conservation, and renewable energy, combined with policy support, make Rwanda a blueprint for green growth in Africa.” The country’s success offers valuable lessons for neighboring nations seeking sustainable development pathways.
