Public Concern Grows Over RSSB Pensions After Elderly Contributor Misses Benefits

Our Reporter
A recent social media post has sparked widespread concern over the management of retirement savings and pension benefits by the Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB). The post describes a troubling case involving an elderly citizen who had contributed to RSSB for years but was denied his pension due to delays in claiming his benefits.
The message, shared by a social media influencer, details how the elderly man had diligently saved with RSSB but was told he could not access his pension because he had delayed to claim it. According to the post, the man saved for over ten years, only to be told that he had exceeded the time limit for claiming his savings. This has led many to question whether the funds are truly being used for the benefit of contributors or if there is mishandling and neglect of citizens’ rights.
The post highlights the pain and frustration of the elderly man, who is battling hunger and hardship, with many viewers calling this situation an injustice and a breach of trust. Citizens argue that such delays and miscommunication are unfair, especially for vulnerable groups who rely on these savings for their livelihood.
In response to the rising concerns, RSSB responds saying: “Muraho neza Sam Kabera! Murakoze kutwandikira. Iki kibazo turacyari kugikurikirana tuzabamenyesha. Murakoze.” (Good morning, Sam Kabera! Thank you for reaching out to us. We are still investigating this issue and will inform you once we have more information. Thank you.)
This incident has intensified calls for greater transparency and accountability from RSSB, with the public demanding reforms to prevent similar situations in the future. Many believe that the current system unfairly penalizes contributors who are unable to claim their benefits within arbitrary deadlines, raising concerns over potential exploitation.
As discussions continue on social media, this case underscores the urgent need for the authorities to review how pension claims are managed and to ensure that the rights of contributors, especially the elderly, are protected.
