Rwanda Marks World Children’s Day With Inclusive Celebration for Children With Disabilities

Children with disabilities from across Rwanda gathered on Thursday, November 20, 2025, for a vibrant and heartfelt celebration of World Children’s Day, an annual global event dedicated to promoting children’s rights and well-being. The ceremony, hosted by the National Paralympic Committee of Rwanda (NPC) in collaboration with UNICEF, took place at the NPC Gymnasium in Remera and served as a powerful reminder of Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and child protection.

The event attracted a wide range of dignitaries and stakeholders in the disability and child-development sectors. Among them were Dominic Muntanga, UNICEF Representative in Rwanda; Uwayo Fabrice, Acting Director General for Sports Development at the Ministry of Sports; Ingabire Assumpta, Director General of the National Child Development Agency (NCDA); Bizimana Dominique, President of NPC Rwanda; as well as coaches, educators, and community leaders. Parents of children with disabilities also attended in large numbers, creating a warm, family-oriented atmosphere that underscored the importance of community support.

This year’s theme, “My Rights, Always,” reinforced the principle that children’s rights are permanent, non-negotiable, and universal regardless of disability, background, or circumstance. Speakers throughout the event highlighted how vital it is for every child to live in an environment that respects their dignity, nurtures their abilities, and encourages their full participation in society. The presence of children from multiple districts including Gasabo, Huye, Nyagatare, and Rubavu reflected a national commitment to ensure opportunities reach every corner of the country.

The celebration was animated by a variety of para-sports designed to build confidence, promote teamwork, and encourage active participation. Laughter, cheering, and joyful competition filled the gymnasium as children took part in Boccia and Goalball, two Paralympic disciplines known for their inclusiveness and accessibility. These games were not only recreational but also educational, offering young participants the chance to develop motor skills, strategic thinking, and social interaction.

In the Boccia tournament, Huye District delivered an impressive performance, securing a 7–3 victory over Gasabo. Meanwhile, in the Goalball matches, the team from Nyagatare distinguished itself as the standout competitor of the day, showcasing strong coordination and determination.

After the sporting activities, the best-performing teams were honored with trophies and awards, celebrating both their achievements and their commitment to teamwork and fair play. The award ceremony was met with applause and pride from parents, coaches, and officials, many of whom expressed hope that such events would continue to inspire and empower children with disabilities nationwide.

Beyond the competitions and festivities, the event carried a deeper message: that inclusive spaces where children with disabilities can grow, learn, and express themselves must be prioritized in Rwanda’s development agenda. Organizers emphasized that celebrating World Children’s Day in this manner helps amplify the voices of children with disabilities and reaffirms the country’s dedication to equal opportunities for all.

As the day concluded, children left the venue not only with medals and memories but with renewed confidence that their rights, talents, and dreams matter. The celebration served as a meaningful step forward in strengthening Rwanda’s vision of a society where every child, regardless of ability, can thrive with dignity and hope.
