Women and Youth Urged to Lead Environmental Conservation Efforts

NYANZA  The Green Party, which advocates for democracy and environmental protection, has connected to gather a women and young people to take an active role in safeguarding the environment, emphasizing that their engagement is crucial to building a sustainable society.

The remarks were made on November 22 during a series of meetings and workshops held in Nyanza District, which also included elections for new youth and women leadership structures within the party. Party officials noted that youth constitute a large and active segment of society, and integrating environmental stewardship into their daily activities can help prevent widespread ecological damage.

Jacqueline Uwera, Green Party Commissioner for Environment, highlighted the pivotal role of women, stating that because they manage many household tasks, prioritizing clean air and water in their communities can yield significant results. She added that educating children about environmental conservation ensures that future generations understand and value its importance.

“Protecting the environment promotes sustainable economic development because citizens enjoy better health when ecosystems are well maintained,” Uwera said. She urged party members to combat all forms of pollution, including air contamination and the contamination of rivers, lakes, and streams. She stressed that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility, and when managed well, it contributes to both public health and income-generating projects.

Youth participants expressed strong commitment to the cause. One attendee said, “I used to think environmental protection was not my concern, but I now realize it is a powerful tool. Neglecting it today will have serious consequences for our future.”

A parent from Nyanza District also highlighted women’s role in conservation, noting that household efforts such as proper waste management and avoiding the cutting of young trees contribute significantly to protecting the environment and teaching children good habits.

Hon. Alexis Mugisha, Green Party Commissioner-in-Chief, called on members to foster environmental awareness in their families and communities, stressing that neglecting conservation has far-reaching consequences. Party members were encouraged to form groups to monitor and promote environmental protection activities locally.

The government of Rwanda has set a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 38% by 2029 as part of its broader environmental conservation agenda.
