Gakenke–Musanze: Residents Express Concerns Over Unsafe Wooden Bridge, Governor Promises Action

By Libos Ndayishimiye

Residents who rely on the Kamisave Bridge, which connects Remera Sector in Musanze District to Cyabingo Sector in Gakenke District, have raised urgent safety concerns. The bridge, constructed from just three wooden logs, poses a significant risk to the lives of those who cross it daily, including schoolchildren, farmers, and mothers seeking healthcare services.

Anaclet Mbarubukeye, a resident of Kabeza Village, voiced his worries about his children’s safety while crossing the bridge to attend school. “Whenever it rains, the river swells, making the logs slippery and unstable. I constantly fear that one day my child might fall and drown. We feel completely isolated here,” he stated.

Sylvestre Nkurunziza, a farmer from Gakenke, highlighted the economic impact of the inadequate infrastructure. “I’ve stopped taking my produce to the market on the other side because crossing the bridge with a bicycle loaded with Irish potatoes is nearly impossible. I fear falling into the river and losing everything.”

Jacqueline Nyiraminani, a 42-year-old mother from Kamisave Village, shared that the bridge has become a barrier to accessing healthcare. “Many times, we’ve turned back with sick children because we couldn’t risk crossing. When it rains, we are completely cut off. This bridge is a serious health and safety hazard.”

During a media briefing on November 28, 2025, with journalists covering the Northern Province, the Governor, MUGABOWAGAHUNDE Maurice, acknowledged the problem and assured that action is on the way.

“This issue is well known. In Gakenke District alone, we need over 200 bridges. Plans are underway to prioritize this in the 2026/2027 fiscal year budget so that urgent areas receive immediate attention,” he said.

He added that the government is collaborating with partners like Bridge to Prosperity to facilitate bridge construction, urging citizens to protect the infrastructure once it is built.

“The government is committed to ensuring equal access to essential services for all citizens, and no one should be left behind due to poor road or bridge infrastructure,” the Governor emphasized.

This situation underscores the urgent need for improved infrastructure in rural areas while also highlighting the government’s willingness to act and invest in sustainable solutions that enhance people’s lives.
