University of Rwanda, Huye Campus Students Praise Accommodation Initiative by University and Private Sector

Students at the University of Rwanda, Huye Campus have expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the university administration and private sector partners who have played a pivotal role in providing student accommodation close to the campus. According to the students, this initiative has greatly eased both their academic workload and daily life challenges, enabling them to focus more effectively on their studies.
In interviews with several students, many emphasized that living near the campus allows them to concentrate fully on academics without the stress and time lost to long commutes. Alice Uwimana, an SJC student, said that having accommodation nearby has been a huge benefit. She explained that they no longer waste time traveling long distances, which allows them to dedicate more time to studying and conducting research. Alice expressed deep gratitude to the university and private sector partners for their role in providing these accommodations.
Similarly, Eric Niyonzima, a second-year social sciences student, highlighted that the nearby accommodations provide a safe and conducive environment for both resting and studying. He noted that having secure and convenient places to stay not only improves students’ focus but also gives them peace of mind, which is essential for academic success.
Students also urged the university and private sector partners to expand the number of available accommodations, ensuring that more students can benefit from living on or near campus. Linda Mukamana, a first-year science student, emphasized the importance of growth in this area, stating that continued development of accommodation facilities would help minimize shortages and allow students to pursue their studies and personal development more effectively.
Responding to students’ concerns, the university administration confirmed that plans are underway to construct additional accommodation units, with particular attention to female students and students with special needs. Nyirahabimana Theresie, Head of Student Affairs at the Huye Campus, explained that the University of Rwanda currently enrolls over 30,000 students, but only 23% have access to on-campus accommodation. She added that the university aims to increase this coverage to at least 60% in the coming years to ensure equitable access for all students.
This initiative demonstrates the effective collaboration between the university and private sector actors, allowing students to live closer to academic facilities and dedicate more time to learning and research. Students are calling on these institutions to continue investing in accommodation development to ensure that future cohorts do not face similar challenges.
