Ruhengeri Referral Hospital Urges Men to Accompany Their Wives for Antenatal Checkups

The administration of Ruhengeri Referral Hospital in Musanze district is calling on men to actively participate in the antenatal care of their wives. Hospital officials emphasize that men’s involvement in scheduled pregnancy checkups not only supports women but also strengthens the bond between parents and ensures the well-being of the unborn child.
The hospital’s campaign highlights the importance of attending all eight recommended antenatal visits during a woman’s pregnancy. This program, initially implemented between 2016 and 2017, aims to monitor the health of both the mother and the child, detect potential complications early, ensure proper growth and development of the fetus, administer vaccines and necessary medications, and ultimately reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.
Dr. Muhire Philbert, Director of Ruhengeri Referral Hospital, explains the importance of joint participation. He says: “It is essential for both parents to actively engage in this process. When a husband accompanies his wife, it allows both partners to understand what is happening with the pregnancy, share responsibilities, and prepare for the child’s arrival together. This involvement builds confidence in the mother and enhances family cohesion.”
The hospital emphasizes that men’s involvement is more than just accompanying their wives; it is about active participation in maternal health decisions, understanding potential health risks, and supporting the mother emotionally and physically.
Kayiranga Theobald, Deputy Mayor of Musanze District in charge of Social Welfare, also stresses the district’s role in promoting this practice. He explains: “We noticed that some women were missing their antenatal appointments due to various challenges, including lack of support from their spouses. Our district has launched awareness campaigns to encourage men to accompany their wives to all scheduled checkups. A supportive husband is a key factor in ensuring the health and safety of both mother and child.”
Local couples in Musanze have praised the program for the positive impact it has on family health and relationships. Jeanine Mugenzi, a resident of Muhoza Sector, shares her experience: “Since my husband started accompanying me to all my antenatal visits, we have noticed many benefits. We can identify any health concerns early, and he helps me follow the medical advice given by the health professionals. It has truly strengthened our relationship and reduced my anxiety during pregnancy.”
The antenatal program recommends eight essential visits for expectant mothers, where healthcare providers monitor maternal and fetal health, provide vaccinations and preventive medications, assess potential complications, and give guidance on nutrition and lifestyle. These visits are designed to support a safe and healthy pregnancy journey.
Health officials underline that male involvement in antenatal care contributes to better communication, shared responsibilities, and improved health outcomes. Couples who attend appointments together are more likely to follow medical guidance, prepare for delivery, and ensure the baby receives proper care after birth.
Dr. Philbert adds: “When husbands participate in antenatal care, it not only benefits the mother and child but also strengthens the family as a whole. It encourages mutual understanding and cooperation between partners, which is crucial for the child’s upbringing and overall family well-being.”
The Musanze District administration, in partnership with local health facilities, continues to run community outreach programs, including workshops, radio programs, and local gatherings, to educate men about their role in maternal health. Officials urge all men to support their wives, attend checkups, and actively engage in pregnancy care.
As the program grows, hospital officials hope it will become a nationwide standard, ensuring that every expectant mother receives full support and that Rwanda continues to improve its maternal and child health indicators. “Accompanying your wife to antenatal visits is not just a gesture; it is a commitment to the health and future of your family,” Dr. Muhire concludes.
