Musanze: New Modern Market Set to Transform Lives of Fruit and Vegetable Vendors in Gataraga

Discover how the new modern market in Gataraga, Musanze District, is set to transform the lives of local fruit and vegetable vendors by providing improved facilities, better hygiene, and increased economic opportunities.

After many years of selling in disorganized and harsh conditions under the scorching sun and rain fruit and vegetable vendors at Gataraga Market in Musanze District are about to experience a positive shift, thanks to the near-completion of a modern market facility.

The new market, being constructed through a partnership between Musanze District and Kilimo Trust Rwanda, will feature upgraded stalls protected from sun and rain, modern sanitation facilities, and secure storage areas ensuring better hygiene and safety for both vendors and customers.

This development is a long-awaited solution for over 60 vendors, many of whom have spent years selling their goods directly on the ground, constantly struggling with weather damage and losing customer trust due to poor display conditions.

“This market will allow us to work with dignity and peace of mind”

Josephine Uwurumuri, who has been selling in the market for over 10 years, said she had lost hope due to repeated losses caused by spoilage. “Our goods used to be ruined by sun and rain. But now, we finally see hope, because we’ll be working in a proper, respectful environment,” she said.

Daniel Ndayambaje, a fruit vendor, expressed optimism that the new market would restore customer confidence in their products. “Some customers had stopped buying from us due to poor hygiene, but now that we’ll be selling in a clean and well-organized space, we’re confident it will attract more buyers,” he said.

Alice Nyirabambazi added: “We had gotten used to always fearing the rain or harsh sun, but this new market will help us take our business seriously, as a respected profession.”

Local Government: “The Market Will Improve Livelihoods”

Clarisse Uwanyirigira, Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development in Musanze District, stated that the market would significantly contribute to boosting the local economy. “This initiative aims to help citizens run their businesses in better conditions. The market will also allow vendors to safely store their goods overnight, improve trade, and promote hygiene.”

She added that the facility will help eliminate street vending caused by overcrowding, as the previous temporary market only accommodated 20 vendors. The new market will serve up to 64 traders and is currently 90% complete, with its official opening expected in early 2026.

The market is expected to be a major foundation for improving the livelihoods of women and youth engaged in small-scale trade, offering them access to safer, more hygienic, and opportunity-rich working spaces.
