Empowering Burundian Refugees: Leather Craftsmanship Certificates Awarded in Kirehe

Kirehe, December 22, 2025 – Burundian refugees residing in Mahama camp, Kirehe District, recently received certificates for completing a second-cycle course in leather craftsmanship.

This initiative was part of the Made in Rwanda program, particularly in collaboration with the Rwanda Leather Association, which aims to enhance skills and promote value-added jobs.

The courses focused on crafting leather products, such as shoes and bags, that are marketable both locally and internationally. They were designed to help refugees acquire skills that would enable them to create jobs and learn sustainably.

The certificate award ceremony was attended by various leaders, including D’amour Kamayirese, President of the Rwanda Leather Association, who delivered a speech and participated in awarding certificates to the graduates.

In his address, Kamayirese emphasized Rwanda’s commitment to helping and cooperating with others, regardless of their backgrounds. He stated, “Rwanda is a country with a welcoming spirit. Our actions are guided by the national values and the vision set by our Head of State, His Excellency President Paul Kagame. Providing shelter to refugees is not enough; we must also equip them with skills to help them create jobs and learn. This reflects Rwanda’s determination to coexist peacefully with our neighbors and assist them in their development.”

He highlighted the market potential for leather skills and encouraged the graduates to apply their knowledge and leverage their talents.

Some refugees who received certificates shared their gratitude with HANGA NEWS. Among them, Minani Richard and Tuyisenge Janine expressed their appreciation for the support they have received from the Government of Rwanda.

Minani Richard remarked, “After granting us asylum, the Rwandan government has once again assisted us by providing opportunities to learn new skills. The knowledge we have gained will help us create jobs and advance our lives. We are deeply grateful to President Paul Kagame and the country of Rwanda for their kindness and vision.”

Tuyisenge Janine added, “These courses have opened my eyes to new opportunities for learning and personal development. We are thrilled with these certificates. The skills we learned will help us support ourselves, boost our confidence, and prepare for a brighter future. We see that the development Rwanda aims for its citizens also benefits us, as refugees.”

The graduates have demonstrated their readiness to apply their newly acquired knowledge, collaborate with others, and contribute to their community’s development, despite being in exile.

This event highlights the significant role Rwanda continues to play in supporting refugees, not just by ensuring their safety but also by providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary for a hopeful future.
