The Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) confirmed that the 63-kilometer road project, launched in 2024, is progressing smoothly and remains on schedule. Once completed, the road is expected to greatly enhance trade, health access, and overall economic activity in Burera and Rulindo districts.

The road project, valued at over Rwf 96.7 billion, is being financed by the Government of Rwanda and is part of a broader national strategy to improve rural connectivity and economic inclusion. This critical infrastructure initiative also fulfills a promise made by President Paul Kagame nearly a decade ago to the people of Burera District, who have long faced mobility challenges due to poor road conditions.

A Lifeline to Health, Education, and Opportunity

This new road is especially significant because it connects to Butaro Hospital, home to Rwanda’s main cancer treatment center, and the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE). These two institutions have become regional hubs for healthcare and medical education, attracting professionals, patients, and students from across the country and neighboring nations. The road’s completion will ease access to these critical services, shortening travel times and improving emergency responses.

In addition to boosting access to health services, the road is expected to fuel economic transformation in the region. It forms part of the wider Base-Kirambo-Butaro-Cyanika corridor, positioning it as a strategic route for cross-border trade with Uganda. The new road also unlocks tourism potential around Lakes Burera and Rulindo, creating opportunities for local communities to benefit from increased visitor traffic.

Residents Express Optimism

For residents who have endured years of travel difficulties and isolation, the road brings hope for a better future. Many are already preparing to take advantage of new economic possibilities that will emerge once the road is complete.
Lilliane MUKARUZIGA, shared her excitement:“This road is not just about transportation. It’s about unlocking opportunities economic, educational, and social for thousands of people,” “It will connect communities, improve healthcare access, and promote inclusive development.” She said

With more than half of the work already completed, optimism is running high that the road will be finalized soon, fulfilling the long-held hopes of Burera residents and the region at large.

The Base-Butaro-Kidaho road stands as a powerful testament to Rwanda’s commitment to rural development, infrastructure modernization, and community-centered progress. As bulldozers continue shaping the route and bridges rise across valleys, the road is paving more than asphalt it is paving a path to prosperity.
