Clean Water Brought Closer to Residents of Nyagisasa and Akagarama: A Major Step Toward Improved Hygiene and Well-Being

Residents of Nyagisasa and Akagarama villages, located in Muyira Cell, Kibilizi Sector of Gisagara District, have expressed great satisfaction following the introduction of clean water services closer to their communities. They say the project will significantly improve hygiene, prevent waterborne diseases, and enhance their overall quality of life.

For many years, residents of these villages have faced serious challenges in accessing clean water. Women and children were particularly affected, as they had to walk long distances to fetch water from distant and sometimes unsafe sources, exposing them to health risks.

The lack of nearby clean water led to poor hygiene conditions and the persistence of sanitation-related diseases. It also slowed household development, as much of the time spent fetching water could have been used for productive and income-generating activities.

In response to these challenges, the Gisagara District administration, in partnership with development partners, initiated a project to bring clean water closer to residents. The initiative aims to improve living standards and aligns with the government’s policy of ensuring access to essential infrastructure for all citizens.

Residents say that the availability of clean water will not only benefit household use but will also support small-scale agriculture, improve sanitation in homes, schools, and places of worship, and contribute to better overall living conditions.

Through this project, community members have committed to protecting the water infrastructure provided and to continuing to work closely with local authorities to promote hygiene and sustainable development.

Mukamana Louise, a resident of Nyagisasa village, shared her experience, saying: “We had spent a long time fetching water from far away, which required a lot of effort. Having clean water closer to us is very good news. It will help us maintain hygiene and raise our children in better conditions.”

Nshimiyimana Emmanuel, a resident of Akagarama village, also noted that the project will play a vital role in improving community health. “Clean water means life. This project will help us prevent hygiene-related diseases and develop as a community,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the district leadership, HABINEZA Jean Paul, the Vice Mayor of Gisagara District in charge of Economic Development, stated that the project is part of the district’s broader strategy to improve residents’ welfare. “This clean water project is one of the district’s key development priorities. We assure residents that before the end of this fiscal year, clean water will be available to them on a permanent basis,” he said.

He further emphasized that Gisagara District is implementing other infrastructure projects, including electricity distribution and road improvements, and encouraged residents to settle in planned villages to facilitate easier access to these essential services.

The clean water project is considered a cornerstone of Gisagara District’s development, particularly in the areas of hygiene and sanitation. Clean water remains a fundamental pillar of human life, playing a critical role in disease prevention, promoting good health, and increasing community productivity.
