Angola To Repatriate 180 Prisoners Held in Namibia

Deputy Attorney General of the Republic of Angola, says an Angolan delegation is in Namibia today following an invitation from the Namibia to workout mechanisms of repatriation of Angolan prisoners.
A 12-member Angolan delegation is in Namibia to verify the nationality of 184 Angolan nationals held in Namibian prisons.
According to details, out of the 184 Angolan nationals in Namibian prison facilities, 180 are sentenced inmates and 4 are awaiting trial.
The group of Angolan prisoners held in Namibia consists of 181 men and 3 women.
TopAfricanews has established that a total of 107 inmates have applied for transfer to Angola.
From February 18 to 20, 2026, a joint technical team is conducting interviews at the Windhoek Correctional Facility and the Windhoek Female Correctional Facility to confirm identities and documentation.
Only 17 of the applicants currently possess the required national identification documents to facilitate the transfer.
The process is part of a “Transfer of Sentenced Offenders Agreement” that came into effect in November 2022, aimed at reducing the burden on Namibian prisons.
Inmates are incarcerated for various offences, including stock theft, immigration violations, rape, drug possession, and murder.
However, it has emerged that about 73 inmates have indicated they are not willing to be transferred.
