Northern Province Leadership Calls for Ethical Renewal and Humanity in Healthcare During Genocide Commemoration

Butaro Hospital is one of a place widely known for saving lives and restoring hope, a solemn moment of reflection unfolded as staff and community members gathered to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi. The event served not only as a time to honor the victims but also as a powerful reminder of the critical role that healthcare professionals must play in safeguarding humanity.

The commemoration was marked by an impactful address from Maurice Mugabowagahunde, who guided attendees through the painful history of the Genocide, with particular focus on what transpired within hospitals and health centers. His message was both sobering and thought-provoking, shedding light on the dark chapter when places meant for healing were turned into grounds of betrayal and death.

Governor Mugabowagahunde emphasized the tragic reality that some leaders and staff within healthcare institutions abandoned their professional ethics and participated in the killings. These acts, he noted, remain a stain on the moral fabric of the medical profession and a reminder of how deeply society can fall when values are lost.

He stressed that the medical profession carries a sacred duty: to protect life without discrimination and to uphold dignity in all circumstances.
