New Classrooms and Sanitation Facilities to Transform Learning in Musanze District

In forward-looking step for improving the quality of education, authorities in Musanze district have announced the construction of 26 new classrooms and 36 modern latrines during the 2026/2027 fiscal year. The infrastructure will be developed across the sectors of Kinigi, Gacaca, Musanze, Busogo, and Gashaki, targeting some of the areas most affected by school overcrowding and inadequate sanitation facilities.
This initiative comes as a timely intervention to address persistent challenges faced by both students and teachers. Overcrowded classrooms have long strained the teaching and learning process, often limiting student participation and reducing the effectiveness of instruction. With the addition of new classrooms, schools are expected to create more conducive environments where learners can fully engage and teachers can deliver lessons more efficiently.
Equally important is the construction of 36 latrines, a move that underscores the commitment to improving hygiene and sanitation standards in schools. Access to clean and adequate sanitation facilities is not only essential for students’ health but also plays a crucial role in maintaining school attendance, particularly among girls.
Local residents have welcomed the project with optimism and gratitude, noting its potential to transform education in their communities. Manikuzwe Daniel, a parent from Busogo Sector, emphasized the urgency of such developments. “For years, children had been studying in overcrowded classrooms which made learning difficult. He expressed confidence that the new classrooms would significantly improve the situation and give children a better chance to succeed.” He said
Similarly, MUTESI Ornella, a resident of Gashaki Sector, highlighted the importance of improved sanitation facilities. She explained :”The lack of enough latrines had been a serious concern, especially for young girls, and sometimes led to absenteeism.” According to her, the new facilities will restore dignity and encourage students to attend school regularly without discomfort or fear.
Education officials believe that this infrastructure development will have a lasting impact of improving academic performance but also by promoting a healthier and more inclusive school environment. By reducing congestion and enhancing sanitation, schools will be better positioned to nurture disciplined, confident, and capable learners.
Musanze District continues to invest in its education sector as project stands as a clear demonstration of its commitment to building a brighter future and reflection of a broader vision where every child has access to a safe, clean, and supportive learning environment.
