Basketball, Handshakes and Warm Smiles: How Gen Muhoozi’s Kigali Visit Captured a New Chapter in Uganda-Rwanda Ties
Kigali, Rwanda — 27 July 2026: The aircraft touched down at Kigali International Airport under clear July skies on Saturday morning. As Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, stepped onto Rwandan soil, a line of senior officers in crisp uniforms stood ready.
At the forefront was Gen. Mubarakh Muganga, Chief of Defence Staff of the Rwanda Defence Force, flanked by Maj. Gen. Willy Rwagasana of the Republican Guard and Uganda’s own Defence Attaché, Col. Ezekeil Matsiko. Handshakes were firm, smiles genuine. Cameras clicked. The two-day official working visit had begun.
What followed felt less like a formal diplomatic itinerary and more like a carefully staged reunion between neighbours who have chosen, once again, to walk forward together.
By afternoon, the Ugandan general was inside Village Urugwiro. President Paul Kagame received him for high-level talks that official statements described as focused on “strengthening bilateral cooperation” and advancing “peace, security and stability” across the Great Lakes region. The two men spoke of shared interests, military collaboration between the UPDF and RDF, and a region that still needs steady hands.
Yet the images that would later flood timelines were not only of conference tables and flags.
Later that day and into Sunday, Gen. Muhoozi left the formal rooms behind and stepped into the living heartbeat of modern Kigali. Accompanied by City Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva, he toured the expanding King Faisal Hospital — soon to double its capacity to 400 beds with new intensive-care units, VVIP wings and a helipad.
He walked the pathways of Nyandungu Eco Park and viewed the rising elegance of Parklane Estate. These were not obligatory photo opportunities; they were moments of a senior regional commander taking time to study how a neighbouring capital is reshaping itself.
Then came the moment that turned protocol into pure humanity.
After the official discussions, President Kagame and Gen. Muhoozi laced up and took to the basketball court. Ugandan journalist and long-time associate Andrew Mwenda looked on as the Rwandan president sank shots and the Ugandan general competed with easy laughter.
The scene was simple, almost ordinary — two men in sports — yet it spoke louder than any communiqué. In a region long defined by tension and caution, here was a public display of ease and mutual regard.
The visit closed as smoothly as it began. By Sunday evening the Ugandan delegation prepared to return home.
