Rwanda Strengthens Africa’s Fight Against Gender-Based Violence by Signing Landmark AU Convention

Rwanda has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of women and girls after signing the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG), becoming the ninth African country to endorse the landmark continental agreement.

The Convention was signed by Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, marking another significant milestone in the country’s longstanding efforts to promote gender equality, strengthen legal protections, and eliminate all forms of violence targeting women and girls.

The AU-CEVAWG Convention provides a comprehensive legal and policy framework aimed at preventing, addressing, and ultimately ending violence against women and girls across the African continent. It encourages member states to adopt and strengthen laws, policies, and institutional mechanisms that ensure justice, protection, and support for survivors while holding perpetrators accountable.

By joining the Convention, Rwanda has reinforced its position as one of Africa’s leading advocates for gender equality and the empowerment of women. The country’s signature reflects its continued dedication to implementing policies that uphold the dignity, safety, and rights of women and girls, while contributing to broader continental efforts to eradicate gender-based violence.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Rwanda fully supports the objectives and principles enshrined in the Convention, noting that they are consistent with the country’s national vision and its Gender Policy. The Ministry emphasized that the agreement complements Rwanda’s existing legal and institutional framework designed to promote equal opportunities, protect vulnerable groups, and advance inclusive development.

The signing also underscores Rwanda’s commitment to working closely with fellow African Union member states in creating safer communities where women and girls can live free from violence, discrimination, and abuse. As the Convention gains momentum across the continent, Rwanda’s participation is expected to encourage wider regional cooperation in strengthening legal safeguards and accelerating collective action against gender-based violence.
