Rwanda Receives More Than 410 Citizens Freed from FDLR Captivity in DR Congo
Rwanda has received more than 410 Rwandans who had been held hostage by the armed group Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), bringing them back into the country through two border crossings before transferring them to a temporary reception centre for further assistance.
The returnees entered Rwanda through the Grande Barrière border crossing, which connects Rwanda and the DRC in Rubavu District, and the Rusizi I border crossing in Rusizi District.
Their arrival marks a significant development in efforts to bring home Rwandans who had been trapped in the forests of eastern DRC, where they had reportedly been held against their will by the FDLR, an armed group operating in the region.

Following their reception at the border, the more than 410 returnees were transported to the Nyarushishi temporary reception centre in Rusizi District, where they are expected to stay as arrangements are made for the next steps concerning their welfare and reintegration into normal life.
The temporary centre is expected to provide accommodation while the relevant authorities prepare subsequent measures to address the returnees’ immediate needs and determine the appropriate arrangements for their future.
The return of the group highlights the continuing humanitarian consequences of armed-group activities in eastern DRC, where insecurity has affected civilian populations and complicated efforts to ensure their safety and freedom of movement.
For the returnees, arrival in Rwanda marks the end of their reported captivity in the Congolese forests and the beginning of a transition period during which arrangements will be made to support their return to civilian life.
