EU allocates € 10 million for peace and security in the Great Lakes region.

The regional project on peace and security for the stability of the Great Lakes Region was officially launched this Wednesday, December 12, 2018, at the headquarters of the Secretariat of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) in Bujumbura.

Funded by the European Union for the sum total of ten million euros, the project will be implemented over a period of 48 months, in partnership with GIZ and United Nations organizations, under the direction of the Office of the Envoy Secretary General’s Special the United Nations for the Great Lakes, through the Strategic Framework of the United Nations Regional Office for Great Lakes, launched in March 2017 by
the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The project was launched in presence of the national coordinator from the ICGLR to the Burundi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Gaspard Kabura, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Burundi, Mr. Wolfram Vetter, Executive Secretary of the ICGLR, Ambassador Zachary Muburi-Muita, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to the region of the Great Lakes, Mr. Said Djinnit and the German Ambassador to Burundi, Mr. Michael Hausler.

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the consolidation of peace and stability in the Great Lakes region by strengthening the capacity of the ICGLR secretariat in this area.

This project will support the ICGLR at the level of its secretariat and its national structures and the Levy Mwanawasa Center in Lusaka (LMRC) on democracy and good governance Goma Centers (the Joint Extended Verification Mechanism-MCVE and Joint Information Center-JRC) and the Kampala Regional Training Facility on sexual violence based on gender (RTF-VSBG).

It focuses on three key results, namely the strengthening of the ICGLR’s capacity as a regional political institution, improving the management of mineral resources and the reduction of the link with conflicts, the strengthening of protection and repression of violations of human rights in general and violence against women and children in particular.

The action is part of the EU’s support for finding solutions the issues of peace, security, and regional stabilization, which are crucial for the countries of the Great Lakes region, through the 11th Regional Indicative Program of the European Development Fund (EDF) for the Eastern and Southern Africa Region and the Indian Ocean (EA-SA-IO) for the period 2014-2020
