EU to provide 20 Million Euros to Support Rwanda Defense Forces in Mozambique

The European Union (EU) has announced plans to provide 20 million euros (equal to 28 billion Frw) to support the operations of the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) in Cabo Delgado Province in Mozambique. This funding will be given through the organization’s program aimed at supporting peace around the world.

Marc Botenga, representative of Belgium in the EU Parliament, confirmed this information in a social media post expressing his discontent with the grant. France is among the EU countries that support the decision to provide this assistance to the Rwandan army.

This decision comes after the signing of an agreement between Rwanda and the EU for a grant of 19.5 million euros to support the development of the justice system in July 2023.

The EU Commission previously funded RDF operations in Cabo Delgado in December 2022, allocating 20 million euros to help acquire equipment for fighting against terrorist activities and resettling displaced persons.

The Rwandan army has been present in Cabo Delgado since July 2021, on a mission to combat the terrorist activities of the Ansar al Sunnah group that has been disrupting the province’s security since 2017.
