Africa Leaders meet to address Root Causes of Insecurity in Eastern DRC amid escalating tensions

An Extra-Ordinary summit hosted by President João Lourenço of Angola at the African Union Headquarters brought together key regional leaders, including President Kagame of Rwanda, to discuss the ongoing insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The meeting highlighted issues such as bad governance, ethnic discrimination, and violence as root causes of the crisis in the region.

President Felix Tshisekedi of DRC and other dignitaries, including William Ruto of Kenya and Ndayishimiye of Burundi, also attended the summit. The rampant killings in eastern DRC have raised concerns among neighboring countries, with lives lost and tensions escalating.

Presence of the South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, whose army has been involved in recent attacks in eastern DRC as part of SADC forces, emphasized the need for a collective effort to address the insecurity.

President Kagame and Tshisekedi being brought together in such urgent meetings, symbolize the urgency to address the underlying issues in the crisis.

Rwanda, a neighboring country to DRC, remains vigilant due to threats originating from the mineral-rich region.

DRC often blames Rwanda for the insecurity, and tensions have escalated with the recent alliance between DRC and Burundi against Rwanda.

The Addis-Ababa meeting aimed to pave the way for a new era of peace and stability in eastern DRC.

However, it remains to be seen whether concrete steps will be taken to address the root causes of the insecurity plaguing the region.
