AU Chairman proposes for reconciliation conference to solve Libya’s political crisis

African Union Commission Chairman Moussa Faki on Monday, April 1 proposed to hold a national reconciliation conference to solve the political crisis in Libya.

Moussa Faki made his remarks during a meeting with Libya’s UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj, in the Libyan capital Tripoli, where the two officials discussed Libya’s latest political and security developments as well as upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in the country.

“The chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission presented a proposal of the AU to the prime minister to hold a conference of national reconciliation, stressing that the decision in the Libyan issue should be a Libyan decision, and expressed disapproval of external interventions that further complicate the crisis,” a statement issued by Serraj’s information office said.

Serraj welcomed the proposal, hoping that the suggested conference would be under the umbrella of the UN, the statement added. Libya has been suffering political division between western and eastern governments, despite signing a UN-sponsored political agreement later in 2015, as reported by Xinhua.

The North African nation has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and chaos, ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
