France and Genocide: This is what Rwanda wants from experts appointed by Macron

A traditional fire lit to remember the more than one million Rwandans killed in the Genocide against the Tutsi burns bright at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali where a night vigil took place

Rwanda wants a group of experts assigned to probe the role of France in the Genocide committed against the Tutsi to be a group of real experts rather than being a group of amateurs.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday after meeting representative of Ibuka France appointed a panel of experts to probe France’s actions in Rwanda during the country’s genocide 25 years ago, a subject that has dogged Franco-Rwandan relations since the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.

The commission of eight researchers (names not yet known) and historians “will be tasked with consulting all France’s archives relating to the genocide… in order to analyse the role and engagement of France during that period,” the presidency said in a statement.

Speaking at a Night of Remembrance in Kigali, on Sunday, April 07, 2019, Ibuka President Jean Pierre Dusingizemungu said “Rwandans expect unbiased tangible results if the commission named by French President is composed of real Experts.”

Dusingizemungu requested the commission to be professional and credible while investigating France’s role in the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi and even time before the Genocide.
