Kamonyi: Parents urged to care for children with Disabilities

Last Week officials from Hope and Homes for Children met parents who have children with disabilities and discussed how they can take care of their children as well as enable them to enjoy a dignified life like other children in their neighborhood.  

The Call was made in Kamonyi District in the Southern Province where 37 families made up of parents whose children are disabled were meeting with district officials.

 Together with Aline Kayiganwa from Hope and Homes for Children (HHC), they discussed on how to care for children with disabilities.

With assistance from Hope and Homes for Children, parents committed to do everything in their power to ensure those children enjoy

Ms Immaculée Umubyeyi a representative of the National Commission for Children in Kamonyi district reminded parents that children with disabilities need them most. “Above all, show them love, nothing count much for them than love and parental care” She said

Reminding the parents about their responsibilities she pointed out: “In the past we saw some irresponsible parents abandoning their children just because of their disabilities. Like other children, they have the right to education, to live in the family, to be loved and cherished” 

According to Aline Kayiganwa, the coordinator of HHC activities in Kamonyi, Nyarugenge and Gisagara, those parents were equipped with skills in income generating activities to empower them economically to avoid family break up that lead to child abandonment. “There are those who decided to buy pigs, goats, some of them decided to invest in poultry, others opened small shops. Children with disabilities were also assisted with walking sticks for those who are blind and wheelchair to facilitate them to go to school” She added

Ms Prisca Uwamahoro, the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs in Kamonyi district urged parents to make good use of the assistance provided to them by Hope and Homes for Children. 

She urged parents to make sure there is a positive change in the lives of children with disabilities as a sign of appreciation to what Hope and Homes for Children did for them. “The financial assistance provided to you must be well managed. We hope your income generating activities will help you take good care of children

Munyemana Innocent is one of those parents from Gacurabwenge Sector in Kamonyi district. Speaking to media he said: “With 370,000 Rwf I received from Hope and Homes for Children, I will pay the medical bill of my child, the rest will help me improve my financial situation to cater for the need of all my family

Those 37 families have 120 children and, among them 41 are children with disabilities. Other HHC stakeholders in Kamonyi include foster cares (Malayika Mulinzi) who contributed to move children with disabilities out of orphanages
