President Paul Kagame has told the UN General Assembly that the COVID 19 pandemic has disrupted the implementation of programs and activities aimed at achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

President Kagame who was speaking at the Assembly in a Pre-recorded speech calls for refocus on SDGs while at the same time figuring out how to achieve them.

However, President Kagame noted that the post pandemic and refocusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should take into consideration the issue of climate change.

The Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”. The SDGs were set up in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by the year 2030.

President Kagame said “In fairness, we were behind schedule with the SDGs even before the pandemic hit. But there is now increased attention to figuring out how to refocus our efforts and catch up.”

Kagame advised that the world needs to convert the sense of urgency into a durable political commitment to achieving SDGs.

However, President Kagame added “that commitment must put climate change mitigation at the centre of our efforts. The severity of weather-related disasters is increasing year- by- year. We cannot afford the results of COP-26 in November to be inclusive or divisive.”

The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, is the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference. It is scheduled to be held in the city of Glasgow, Scotland between 31 October and 12 November 2021, under the presidency of the United Kingdom.

The COP26 summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
