Leaders in COP26 must not forget the importance of the media in tackling climate change

Since the beginning of November 2021, COP26 is convened in Glasgow to jointly review strategies to combat climate change that continues to pose dangerous effects on human health and the global economy.

Many countries have agreed to take a leading part in combating this war through various initiatives such as afforestation, reducing industrial emissions, promoting green economy, Creating Green jobs among many others.

Since the first day when COP26 was announced, we have never heard any senior official in the world confirming that out of the $ 100 billion required annually, there is a portion reserved for media financing or capacity building to enable that sector to play its potential role in tackling the effects of climate change.

Let us keep in mind that the Media is a channel of revolution and change in attitudes towards certain issues whether they are threatening the world or the country to a country, certain people or certain activities.

The fact that strong measures are being taken to fight such a big world war without clear strategies for media involvement is a deliberate disregard of the importance of the power of the media.

States Parties are required to make clear their journey in the face of climate change and the emergence of cooperation with civil society and non-governmental or state organizations but not forgetting that Media whether are local or international want also to be considered through budgeting so they can demonstrate their contribution to make the world a better place for us and our future.

The reason for this should be kept in mind that in many countries there are organizations of journalists who report about environment and climate change issues but are mostly struggling to find the means to reach the sources information at a local level hence they are always relying on tweets or other social media posts to make stories that are not helping much in raising awareness in the community.

This is a serious problem because few journalists are able to write environmental or climate change stories in such a way that their local stories can bring the desired impacts but again cannot reach the real grassroots level.

Supporting the media in this 21st Century war against Climate Change is one of the most powerful weapons that will continue to help the world achieve its goals in the face of its effects.

Let us hope that the media will be given an active role in the NDCs’ programs and that it will be based on the capacity of each country to help journalists reach the source of information to be given to the public so that they are able to make a right decision vis a vis the climate change concern.

This is very easy, first and foremost because every country and partners feel that it is time for a Media to be the light bearer in the face of the effects of climate change.

Time is now! Climate change concerns us all.
