Paul Kagame, PIH, UGHE, other mourn the death of Dr. Paul Farmer

Partners In Health announced that its founder, Dr. Paul Farmer, unexpectedly passed away on Monday, 21st February 2022 in his sleep while in Rwanda.

Dr. Farmer was 62 years old. He is survived by his wife, Didi Bertrand Farmer, and their three children.

Partners In Health CEO Dr. Sheila Davis released the following statement:
“Paul Farmer’s loss is devastating, but his vision for the world will live on through Partners in Health. Paul taught all those around him the power of accompaniment, love for one another, and solidarity. Our deepest sympathies are with his wife Didi and three children.”

The passing of Dr. Paul Farmer, Co-founder of the University of Global Heath Equity shocked various people among them is President Paul Kagame of Rwanda.

In a message wrote on his Twitter account, President Paul Kagame described Paul Farmer as a valuable person.

“It is hard to find the words to express the sad news of the passing of Paul Farmer – the person, the Doctor, the philanthropist. He combined many things hard to find in one person. The weight of his loss is in many ways personal, to the country of Rwanda (which he loved and to which he contributed so much during its reconstruction), to my family and to myself. I know there are many who feel this way in Africa and beyond. My deepest condolences to Didi, his wife, their children, family and friends.” Paul Kagame Tweeted.

The University of Global Health Equity also released the following statement:

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Chancellor, Professor Paul Farmer who was the Founder of Partners In Health (PIH) and the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE), which
occurred today. He has been an inspiration for most of us at UGHE.

This is so sudden, an unimaginable catastrophe to all of us, and the global health community as a whole.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Please join us to mourn the passing of our beloved role model, our leader, our dearest friend, and our Muganga Mwiza.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, his colleagues at Partners In Health and the UGHE Family.

We request for your prayers as we go through this difficult time.”
