GATENGA: Salesians launches Programme to train youth on Modern agriculture

On Wednesday, November 9, 2022 in Don Bosco Gatenga TVET School, salesians of Don Bosco through the Planning and Development Office launched a Green program to teach students how to do modern agriculture in a way that does not harm the environment.

The Environmental Friendly Agriculture training program is in line with the Gatenga Agriculture Project which aims to promote organic agriculture in the Gatenga Youth Center and in the nearby communities.

This project, which is funded by Fondazione Don Bosco Nel Mondo, also aims to fight malnutrition among children under the age of five, especially those from poor families, where they will be able to get vegetables as a nutritional supplement.

In the beginning this project will focus mainly on the Green House agriculture in order to avoid the climate impacts that may affect the growth of the crops that will be planted as part of the long-term agriculture programme.

Inaugurating the activity of training students on modern farming, Father Serivilien Ufitamahoro, the Director of Planning and Development Office who is also the Provincial Economer, said that this project aims to promote modern agriculture for the community self-sufficient in food, to preserve the environment and to help students to have a sense of practicing organic agriculture.

The director of Don Bosco Gatenga TVET School Father Turabanye Jean Pierre added that the project will not only equip students with agriculture skills but also be a source of income for the school and improved nutrition for not only nearby communities but also for students who take meals at school.

The project which is now being implemented in Don Bosco Gatenga Youth Center has many components among them are the environment conservation as well as training youth and supporting vulnerable farmers to get jobs and vegetables that will help in fighting malnutrition among the children.

According to Felcien DUSABIMANA, the Interim Coordinator of the Salesian Planning and Development Office, the project is a pilot phase that will be scaled up once it is successful.
