TOP AFRICA NEWS Reporter

The eagerly awaited Green City Kigali Project has reached an important milestone with the release of its Draft Master Plan for public engagement. However, residents at the grassroots level in the targeted area have expressed their concerns and impatience over the lack of information regarding the city’s design. In response to these concerns, the Green City Kigali Company has initiated a robust public consultation process to gather valuable feedback and ensure that the Master Plan aligns with the needs and aspirations of the community.

Public Engagement and Consultation:

Last week, the Chief Urban Planner of the City of Kigali, Solange Muhirwa, along with Mr. Basil Karimba, CEO of the Green City Kigali Project, and their team, participated in Umuganda, a community work day, to kick off the public consultation process.

The residents of Kinyinya Sector were given insights and guidance on how they can contribute to the development of the Master Plan. To ensure accessibility, the plan will also be displayed at Kinyinya Sector and City of Kigali offices.

The public is encouraged to actively participate in consultation meetings scheduled throughout this month.

They can share their inputs on the Master Plan through various channels, including the media or by visiting the dedicated Green City help desk at Kinyinya Sector Office.

This inclusive approach aims to ensure that every voice is heard and considered in shaping the future of the city.

Importance of Resilient Urban Planning:

The City of Kigali’s Chief Urban Planner, Ms. Solange Muhirwa, highlighted the significance of resilient urban planning in the face of climate change.

The Green City Kigali Project serves as a proactive response to tackle this challenge effectively. As climate change continues to pose threats to communities worldwide, it is crucial to develop sustainable cities that can adapt and mitigate the impacts of environmental changes.

Sustainable Features of Green City Kigali:

The Green City Kigali Project envisions a sustainable and eco-friendly city that prioritizes the well-being of its residents. The Master Plan incorporates various sustainable features, such as green spaces, renewable energy sources, efficient waste management systems, and environmentally friendly transportation options. These elements aim to create a harmonious balance between economic development and environmental preservation.

Collaborative Decision-Making:

The public consultation phase is a pivotal moment in the development of the Green City Kigali Project. By engaging with residents and stakeholders, the project team can gather valuable insights and ensure that the Master Plan reflects the aspirations and needs of the community. This collaborative decision-making process fosters a sense of ownership and empowers residents to actively contribute to shaping their future living environment.

The Green City Kigali Project’s Draft Master Plan is now open for public engagement, marking an important step towards building a sustainable future for all. The project’s commitment to inclusive decision-making and resilient urban planning demonstrates its dedication to addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

By actively involving residents in the planning process, Green City Kigali aims to create a city that not only meets the needs of its inhabitants but also serves as a model for sustainable development in Rwanda and beyond.
