Rwanda Ministry of Agriculture Urges Seed Multipliers to Uphold Professionalism

Our Reporter

Kigali: The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) is calling on seed multipliers to prioritize professionalism in their work to ensure the quality and availability of seeds in Rwanda.

The Ministry emphasizes the importance of maintaining high standards in seed production as the country aims to reduce its reliance on imported seeds.

Since Rwanda made the decision to stop importing seeds from abroad, the demand for locally produced seeds has increased significantly.

Dr. Karangwa Patrick, the Director General of Agricultural Reform at MINAGRI, acknowledges that while most seed multipliers are dedicated professionals, there are some who may not adhere to proper practices.

He emphasizes the need for vigilance within the industry to prevent the distribution of substandard or fake seeds.

To ensure the quality of seeds, MINAGRI has assigned the Control Department to oversee seed production and distribution. Additionally, the National Seeds Association of Rwanda (NSAR) is implementing strict measures to uphold standards and increase production.

Innocent, the Director of NSAR, affirms that efforts are being made to educate farmers on the importance of using good quality seeds and to encourage collaboration among seed traders and growers.

By promoting professionalism and trust within the industry, the goal is to enhance agricultural productivity and contribute to the overall development of the national economy.

With more than 900 seed growers in Rwanda, there is a growing awareness of the impact that high-quality seeds can have on agricultural productivity.

By investing in good seeds and adopting modern agricultural practices, farmers have the potential to significantly increase their yields and contribute to the transformation of Rwanda’s agricultural sector.
