Rooting for Change: Tree Planting Initiatives in Nyamasheke District

The administration of Nyamasheke District has recently announced a proactive plan to address the issue of erosion and landslides. By setting a goal to plant over a million trees annually, they aim to have all cultivated land covered with agroforestry trees by 2030.

Nyamasheke, a mountainous region, is frequently plagued by landslides and erosion, leading to devastating consequences such as the tragic incident in 2022 where six lives were lost in the Kilimbi sector. To tackle this ongoing problem, the district administration has prioritized tree planting as a sustainable solution.

Mukandekezi Bernadette from the Bushekeli sector shared her experience of planting 200 agroforestry trees after her land suffered erosion. She emphasized that contrary to popular belief, trees contribute to soil fertility by acting as natural fertilizers when their leaves decompose.

With a total cultivated area of 56 thousand hectares in Nyamasheke, the district aims to plant trees on 600 hectares in the upcoming budget year 2023-2024. By encouraging community participation and emphasizing the importance of tree planting, Nyamasheke District is taking significant steps towards a greener, more sustainable future.
