CIAC and SORWATHE Train 514 Tea Farmers in Climate Change Adaptation
CIAC, (Centre intervention et d’Action Communautaire) in partnership with Sorwathe, has successfully trained 514 tea farmers on adapting to the effects of climate change. This initiative has equipped farmers with essential skills to improve water management in tea plantations. Traditionally, women have lagged behind men in tea productivity, but this training aims to bridge that gap.
Ms. Drocella Musabyimana, CIAC Co-founder and Executive Director, stated, “This training initiative is crucial in equipping tea farmers with the necessary skills to adapt to the effects of climate change and improve water management in tea plantations. We are dedicated to bridging the gap between men and women in tea productivity through sustainable farming practices.”
She added, “The integration of agroforestry into tea plantations and the enhancement of canal management will not only increase agricultural production but also ensure the sustainable management of tea plantations in the face of climate change.”
Ms. Musabyimana emphasized the importance of providing specialized training to women, stating, “156 women received training related to the development of nursery value chains. This comprehensive approach aims to improve overall tea productivity and empower women in the agricultural sector.”
CIAC’s commitment to climate-resilient agriculture practices is evident in their nationwide training sessions. Ms. Musabyimana believes that these efforts will not only boost production but also help mitigate the impacts of climate change on tea farmers.
According to the CIAC Executive Director, the training provided farmers with skills in farm planning and techniques to increase agricultural production through the promotion of agroecology practices, with a focus on agroforestry components.
Additionally, Ms. Musabyimana emphasized the role of spouses (both wives and husbands) in developing farm plans. She explained that improving the livelihood of farmers involves promoting good collaboration between spouses. She reminded husbands to always support their wives, as good collaboration is key to success in life, especially in developing countries
