UGHE Team joins Community Efforts to Prevent Flooding and Diseases in Butaro
The Vice Chancellor Prof. Philip Cotton of the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) took part in a community work event in Butaro on Saturday, joining residents to tackle potential flooding in the Kamiranzovu Marshlands as the rainy season approaches.
Prof. Cotton, along with UGHE leadership, students, faculty, and contractors, worked side by side with community members to expand waterways and prevent floods.
Speaking to the gathered crowd, he stressed the importance of remaining vigilant against the spread of diseases such as mpox in Rwanda.
Mr. Faustin Kayitsinga, the Executive Secretary of Butaro Sector, echoed Prof. Cotton’s message and emphasized the need for community cooperation in disease prevention efforts.
In addition to the physical work done during Umuganda, members of the UGHE Student One Health innovation club engaged in educational discussions with the community.
The club, made up of medical students aiming to become future One Health advocates, focused on the prevention and eradication of jiggers.
The collaborative effort between UGHE and the Butaro community highlights the university’s commitment to not only educating future health professionals but also actively engaging in community health initiatives.
