Germany Boosts Ebola Aid to Congo by €11 Million as Outbreak Hits Record Levels
Germany has announced an additional €11 million in support to help fight the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, describing the crisis as the worst in the country’s history. Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan said the situation is absolutely dramatic, with estimates pointing to around 4,900 infections and more than 2,300 deaths in recent months.
The new funding will provide equipment, mobile laboratories and training for healthcare workers on the ground. German officials stressed the importance of remaining able to act effectively in crisis situations even when overall resources are limited.
The European Union is contributing rapid tests and testing equipment worth €2.5 million, with the first deliveries expected this month. The United Nations has also increased its commitment with further funding to support containment efforts.
Armed conflict in the eastern regions of the country continues to hinder the response, making it extremely difficult for medical teams to reach affected communities and carry out essential work. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, has spread rapidly across multiple provinces and remains a major public health challenge for the region.
