Rwamagana District Mayor Leads Partners Meeting on Agriculture and Environmental Initiatives
The Mayor of Rwamagana District, Mr. Mbonyumuvunyi Radjab, on Wednesday led a meeting with partners in agriculture to discuss the preparations for the upcoming 2025A Agriculture season. The meeting also focused on TREPA project and discussed plans to plant trees in the upcoming season.
During the 2025 season, a total of 17,082 hectares of maize, 15,703 hectares of beans, 415 hectares of soybeans, 420 hectares of rice, and 833 hectares of cassava will be planted in the district. Additionally, 180,000 kilos of elite corn seeds and 10,000 kilos of soybean seeds will be planted to support the agricultural efforts.
As part of the TREPA project, which aims to transform the Eastern Province through adaptation, various tree planting initiatives are also underway in Rwamagana District.
In the 2024/2025 season, a total of 22,520 fruit trees will be planted, along with 53,200 trees on roads, 32,000 trees on the edges of lakes and rivers, and restoration efforts for 19 hectares of State forests and 275 hectares of private forests. Furthermore, 40,200 trees will be planted in the mountains to support environmental conservation efforts.
The TREPA project is supported by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and is set to run from 2021 to 2027. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) serves as the Accredited Entity (AE) and lead of the project, with the Ministry of Environment (MoE) through Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA) as the focal Ministry.
The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) are also involved as Service Providers (SP) to RFA, working towards sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation in the region.
