Secretary Blinken’s Call with Kenyan President Ruto Focuses on Peace and Security in Haiti and South Sudan

In a call on November 7, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken expressed his gratitude to Kenyan President William Ruto for Kenya’s leadership in the Multinational Security Support mission to Haiti. The mission aims to restore peace and security to the Haitian people, and the Secretary commended Kenya for its continued efforts in this regard.
During the call, Secretary Blinken and President Ruto also discussed the Tumaini Peace Initiative, a program focused on promoting peace in South Sudan. The Secretary stressed the importance of South Sudanese leaders fully engaging in these peace talks in Nairobi to create a sustainable peace in the region.
The conversation also touched on the situation in Sudan, with both leaders agreeing on the need to coordinate efforts to increase humanitarian access, halt ongoing fighting, and establish a process for restoring civilian governance in the country.
Additionally, Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of continued engagement with the Kenyan public, youth, and civil society following recent protests in the country. He underscored the necessity of holding security forces accountable for their actions during the protests and ongoing reports of abductions.
The Secretary reiterated the strong bond between the United States and Kenya, affirming support for Kenya’s inclusive and democratic future. The call highlighted the shared commitment between the two nations towards promoting peace, security, and stability in the region.
