President Kagame Calls for Accountability and Fair Compensation for Africa at COP29
Baku, Azerbaijan – Today, on the sidelines of COP29, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda joined a meeting on “Measuring the Green Wealth of Africa,” co-hosted by President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo and African Development Bank President Dr Akinwumi Adesina.
During the meeting, President Kagame emphasized the importance of Africa reaffirming its position as a key player in the fight against climate change. He highlighted the issue of insufficient access to climate finance as Africa’s biggest obstacle in addressing climate change.
“Pledges made at previous summits have gone unfulfilled, without accountability. This is not acceptable. Our continent is the least responsible for global emissions, and therefore for the climate crisis. Being fairly compensated for our extensive contributions to climate solutions is not too much to ask,” President Kagame stated.
The meeting at COP29 aimed to discuss ways to measure and quantify the green wealth of Africa, as well as to address the challenges faced by African countries in accessing climate finance. President Kagame’s call for accountability and fair compensation for Africa’s efforts in fighting climate change resonated with many other African leaders present at the summit.
As discussions continue at COP29, President Kagame’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and supporting Africa’s contributions to global climate solutions. The call for accountability and fair compensation is expected to be a key topic of conversation throughout the summit.
