Dr. Valentine Uwamariya called for a decisive action towards Africa’s sustainable mobility
Dr. Valentine Uwamariya, Rwanda’s Minister of Environment, highlighted the importance of sustainable mobility and the urgency of action as transport remains one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. She made this call during her remarks in FIA(Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) General Assemblies’ session themed “A just Transition for Africa”, in Kigali last week.
She emphasized Africa’s potential to lead the world in green mobility solutions. “Together, we can position Africa as a global leader in sustainable mobility, building systems that reflect the resilience, innovation, and unity of our continent. Transport is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, and Rwanda’s initiatives are already setting the stage for a greener future”, she stated.
Starting in January 2025, Rwanda will exclusively register electric motorcycles for public transport in Kigali, significantly reducing emissions while promoting green mobility solutions.
“The concept of a just transition goes beyond technological advancement. It ensures that environmental progress is equitable and inclusive, creating economic opportunities, fostering social equity, and addressing the specific needs of our people”, she added.
Rwanda is advancing clean transport through fiscal incentives such as zero import duties and VAT exemptions for electric vehicles and their components. The country is working with stakeholders to scale retrofitting projects for motorcycles and build the necessary infrastructure to support electric vehicles nationwide.
Rwanda is also sharing its experiences across Africa, encouraging collaboration in adopting scalable and sustainable transport policies and FIA contributes much to such efforts through championing critical projects worldwide, including the promotion of active mobility, investment in electric vehicles adoption and supporting infrastructure development.
“Sustainability is a core element for all work in the FIA. But it’s not just an element, it’s also a responsibility that we care about. From sport and mobility, we are constantly striving to create a greener future”, FIA president Mohamed Ben Sulayem said.
“We know that this sustainable future will not look the same for everyone. Every region is different, every demand is different, even close countries have different needs from that.” He emphasized.
