Ruhango’s Byimana Slaughterhouse: A Game-Changer for Pork Quality and Farmers’ Earnings

In Ruhango District, the Byimana Pig Slaughterhouse has revolutionized the pork industry by improving both quality and market fairness for farmers and consumers. Established in 2023 under the Partnership for Resilient and Inclusive Small Livestock Markets (PRISM) Project, the facility has introduced modern, hygienic processing methods that enhance pork safety while eliminating middlemen who previously exploited farmers with unfair prices.

Before its establishment in Kirengele Cell, Byimana Sector, farmers faced challenges in securing fair prices and often resorted to home-based slaughtering, which posed health risks due to poor hygiene. Today, with slaughtering services priced at 2,000 RWF plus a 1,000 RWF tax fee, farmers can sell pork at 3,500 RWF per kilogram, ensuring better earnings while consumers receive safer, high-quality meat.

Boasting the highest processing capacity in the country, the Byimana Pig Slaughterhouse can handle up to 50 pigs per day (approximately 1,500 per month), though current operations handle around 20 pigs daily. Equipped with modern technology, the facility ensures strict hygiene standards, replacing unsafe traditional slaughtering methods and significantly reducing the risk of food contamination. By setting a new benchmark for pork processing, Byimana Slaughterhouse is not only boosting farmers’ incomes but also ensuring Rwandan consumers have access to healthier, high-quality pork.

Tity Eric NIYONSABA, Managing Director of the slaughterhouse, outlined the three essential stages in the slaughtering process: pre-slaughter treatment, stunning, and the actual slaughter.

“These steps ensure humane treatment of the animals, as required by the Rwandan Livestock and Animal Resources Development Agency (RAB), ultimately improving meat quality,” Niyonsaba stated.

He explained that before slaughtering, a veterinarian conducts an ante-mortem inspection to check the pig’s temperature, skin condition, and heartbeat to detect potential contamination.

“Once the pig arrives, it is examined to ensure it meets food safety standards. It then rests in lairage for 24 hours, drinking only water to clear its stomach contents before slaughter,” he added.

The next day, the animal undergoes electrical stunning, followed by bleeding for three to five minutes before being processed.

“The carcass is thoroughly washed, inspected by a veterinarian, and certified as safe for consumption,” Niyonsaba emphasized.

Local meat vendors have greatly benefited from the slaughterhouse. Alexis NTEZIYAREMYE, a butcher who sources meat from Byimana, praised its impact.

“This facility provides high-quality meat and eliminates the risk of consuming contaminated products. It also ensures we get fair prices for our livestock,” he said.

Ruhango District’s Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, Jean Marie Vianney RUSILIBANA, highlighted the slaughterhouse’s role in promoting food safety and fair pricing.

“Before its establishment, pigs were slaughtered at home, often under unhygienic conditions and without standardized pricing. Now, the facility guarantees both food safety and market efficiency,” he noted.

He further stressed that the slaughterhouse was a much-needed infrastructure for the district.

“Previously, we had no pig slaughterhouse, which exposed the population to unsafe meat. Now, farmers and consumers benefit from a regulated and well-equipped facility,” Rusibirana said.

Strategically located, the slaughterhouse serves not only Ruhango but also neighboring districts, including Muhanga, Huye, and even Kigali. Beyond hygiene and pricing improvements, the facility ensures that meat is sold by weight rather than estimation, fostering transparency in transactions.

The Rwanda Inspectorate, Competition and Consumer Protection Authority (RICA) oversees the facility’s operations, ensuring that professional slaughtering and meat-handling practices are maintained.

The establishment of the Byimana Pig Slaughterhouse, supported by PRISM, has significantly improved pork accessibility, created jobs, and expanded entrepreneurial opportunities in the pig farming sector across Ruhango and beyond.

PRISM is a joint initiative between the Government of Rwanda, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and other partners. It is implemented through the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) and the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), promoting long-term resilience and inclusive development in rural communities.
