Bugesera District Empowers Vulnerable Families with Livelihood-Boosting Cows

The Bugesera District Consultative Council concluded a weeklong consultative outreach by gifting six cows to six impoverished families from Mayange Sector. The families expressed their deep gratitude, excited about the potential impact this support will have on their livelihoods, particularly in improving their agricultural practices and overall well-being.
Individuals who received cows reported difficulties in accessing milk and manure, but the addition of cows is expected to address issues like child stunting.

Patricia MUKAKOMEZA, who resides in Mayange Sector, Bugesera District, believes the cow she received will aid in her development and combat childhood stunting.
She said, “Fertilizer will also help me fertilize vegetables to further reduce stunting in children. It was difficult for me to get health insurance money, but this cow is going to help me pay it on time.”

Rahabu NZAYITURANDE, from Kibirizi Cell, Mayange Sector, described the challenges in obtaining milk for children and fertilizer for the farm, as they were unable to obtain organic options.
She said, “My life is going to change; my grandson will graze this cow, and we will drink milk.”

Mr. Faustin MUNYAZIKWIYE, the president of the Bugesera District Consultative Council, urged cow recipients to take good care of them to ensure their production and reach others.
He said, “The first thing is that the cows should be taken care of and feel that they are theirs; they should not graze in the wild, they should have cowsheds, and they should look for grass, water, and other things they may need.”
A total of six springing cows, valued at over 6 million Rwf, were distributed to six vulnerable families in the Mayange Sector. This effort aims to combat malnutrition-related diseases, enhance agricultural productivity, and accelerate economic development among disadvantaged families.
The annual weeklong activities were organized by the District Consultative Council in collaboration with other local officials, reinforcing the commitment to sustainable community development and social welfare.
