Department Press Briefing Highlights: U.S. Commitment to Peace in the DRC and Budget Review

March 6, 2025 – Washington, D.C.: During a recent press briefing led by Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce, key developments regarding U.S. involvement in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) were discussed, highlighting the administration’s commitment to supporting peace efforts in the region.
Responding to a query from Hariana Veras of TPA regarding the U.S. role in the ongoing conflict mediation led by Angolan President João Lourenço, Bruce confirmed that President Trump has expressed a keen interest in promoting peace not just in the DRC but also in various global hotspots. She emphasized that the administration stands in firm support of the Congolese people and their sovereignty.
Bruce noted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has engaged in direct communication with leaders in the region, advocating for an immediate ceasefire and accountability for human rights violations. She reiterated the importance of returning to the Angolan-led Luanda Process and the Nairobi Process to resolve the conflict effectively.
In addition to discussions on international conflict, Bruce addressed concerns over the U.S. foreign aid budget, particularly the Function 150 account, which encompasses State Department and USAID operations. She explained that President Trump’s administration has initiated a thorough review of the budget to address issues of waste, fraud, and abuse. Bruce acknowledged that this review has led to a temporary pause in certain funding but stressed that it does not signify a withdrawal from foreign aid commitments. Instead, the aim is to ensure that taxpayer dollars are used effectively and efficiently.
“This effort is essential for reforming how we operate and ensuring that our foreign aid achieves the desired outcomes for both global stability and American interests,” Bruce stated.
As the administration continues to navigate complex international challenges, the briefing underscored a clear commitment to diplomatic engagement and aid reform, emphasizing the critical nature of current global conflicts and the need for responsible governance in foreign assistance.
