Governor of Eastern Province Advocates for Improved Infrastructure to Boost Tourism

Pudence Rubingisa, the Governor of the Eastern Province, announced the approval of locations for constructing access roads leading to the region’s lakes, which aim to facilitate trade and tourism. He emphasized that the implementation of these projects will occur gradually as resources become available.

The Eastern Province boasts over 30 lakes, many of which are undergoing development with hotels and tourism initiatives. However, access remains a significant challenge. Around Lake Muhazi, for instance, several hotels have been established, but the condition of the roads leading to them creates hardships for tourists and investors alike.

An investor who has constructed a hotel by Lake Muhazi in Rwamagana District expressed to IGIHE that the road to his establishment is in such disrepair that it is challenging to maintain. He urged the government to prioritize road construction alongside the ongoing development of tourism facilities.

In a recent interview with IGIHE, Governor Rubingisa acknowledged that infrastructure issues have been a persistent concern among investors visiting the province’s lakes. He reassured them that improvements would not occur overnight but are being addressed in a phased manner.

“Our province is rich with lakes and rivers, but they have not been adequately developed. We now have master plans for several areas, with many already approved and others under discussion for prompt approval. These plans detail how we can enhance our tourism sector,” Rubingisa explained.

He added, “The condition of the roads is a common concern voiced by investors. We are currently identifying potential routes for new roads. As resources become available, we plan to collaborate on these initiatives. Additionally, we are also considering other infrastructure projects, including water supply and electricity.”

Lakes such as Muhazi, Sake, and Mugesera are currently witnessing the emergence of modern hotels, as various entrepreneurs strive to enhance the region’s tourism offerings.
