IUCN Welcomes New Members to Expand Conservation Network

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has announced the addition of several new members, including the Rwanda Rural Rehabilitation Initiative (RWARRI), the Sabyinyo Community Livelihood Association (SACOLA), Kishoka Youth Community Based Organization, Kenya Wildlife Conservation Association, Association Analosa, and Island Biodiversity Conservation. This expansion highlights IUCN’s commitment to leveraging a diverse coalition to enhance global conservation efforts.

IUCN harnesses the knowledge, resources, and reach of over 1,400 member organizations, including national and subnational governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), indigenous peoples’ organizations, scientific and academic institutions, and business associations. This diverse membership fosters a collaborative environment where various stakeholders can work together towards a common goal: protecting nature and conserving life on Earth.

RWARRI, established in 1995, focuses on improving the social and economic welfare of rural communities in Rwanda. Since its registration as a non-governmental organization in 2003, it has championed sustainable development through community engagement and empowerment.

SACOLA, founded in 2004, represents over 51,000 individuals in the Kinigi and Nyange sectors of Musanze District, working to enhance local livelihoods while simultaneously protecting the rich biodiversity of the Volcanoes National Park and its valuable mountain gorillas.

The inclusion of new members like Kishoka Youth Community Based Organization and Kenya Wildlife Conservation Association adds important dimensions to IUCN’s mission, bringing insights into youth involvement and local wildlife conservation issues. Additionally, Association Analosa and Island Biodiversity Conservation contribute to the global effort to safeguard unique ecosystems.

Through the collective expertise and commitment of its members, IUCN aims to address critical environmental challenges and promote sustainable practices that benefit both communities and ecosystems. The united efforts of governments, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders under the IUCN umbrella reflect a robust and collaborative approach to conservation.

As these new members join IUCN, they are poised to play a vital role in shaping conservation strategies and policies that will protect the planet’s biodiversity for generations to come.
