Niyobuhungiro Turns Old Bicycle Wheels into Eco-Friendly Furniture, Promoting Environmental Conservation

By Ange de la Victoire DUSABEMUNGU

Niyobuhungiro Pantaleon, a skilled craftsman from Bugesera District in eastern Rwanda, has embarked on an innovative project that transforms old bicycle wheels into stylish and functional furniture. His initiative aims to repurpose discarded wheels, reducing environmental waste while creating modern household items such as chairs, tables, and decorative pieces.

Bugesera District is known for its vibrant cycling community, which results in many old wheels being left behind or discarded. Recognizing this, Niyobuhungiro saw an opportunity to give these old wheels a new lease on life. Instead of allowing them to clutter the environment, he began collecting and repurposing them for furniture production.

“I saw that these old bicycle wheels were just lying around and polluting the environment, so I decided to reuse them creatively,” Niyobuhungiro explained. “Transforming old wheels into furniture is not only beneficial for the environment but also gives me a chance to produce unique and durable items.”

He emphasizes that his project is driven by environmental considerations. “This is a way to contribute to reducing waste and protecting our surroundings,” he said. “I encourage everyone to take part in caring for our environment because small actions can make a big difference.”

Niyobuhungiro’s eco-friendly furniture is gaining popularity in his community, inspiring others to adopt similar practices. His innovative approach highlights how resourcefulness and community effort can address waste management challenges while promoting sustainable development.

As Rwanda continues its commitment to environmental sustainability, Niyobuhungiro’s example demonstrates the power of local initiatives in fostering a cleaner, greener future. Turning old bicycle wheels into furniture not only reduces waste but also offers opportunities for income generation and community empowerment.

“Each old wheel has potential,” Niyobuhungiro said. “With creativity, we can turn waste into beauty while protecting our environment. I call on everyone to join in this movement—together, we can make a difference.”
