Major Makeover in Rutsiro as It Prepares to Host Kivu Beach Expo 2025

Rutsiro District is undergoing a rapid transformation as authorities and private investors finalize key infrastructure works ahead of the Kivu Beach Expo and Festival 2025, an event expected to draw thousands of visitors to the shores of Lake Kivu from December 9 to 15. From newly rehabilitated roads to upgraded hospitality facilities, the district is positioning itself as a major tourism hub in the Western Province, marking what officials describe as a turning point for local economic development.
Roads Upgraded to Ease Access for Visitors
Over the past weeks, previously damaged roads leading to the event sites have been repaired in a joint effort involving the district, local investors and Yirunga Ltd, the main organizer of the Expo and Festival.
Routes connecting Mushubati to Kwishusho as well as roads from Munkomero toward lakeside venues have been levelled, potholes filled and access points widened to allow smooth transport for visitors, traders and logistics teams.

Yirunga Ltd Director Yves Iyaremye said all essential access routes are now ready, noting that improving road safety is critical for protecting visitors’ vehicles and facilitating movement during the busy week.
Rutsiro Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, Emmanuel Uwizeyimana, confirmed the improvements and said they align with the district’s long-term strategy to expand tourism and attract private investment. He emphasized that these works will help visitors reach hotels and the lakeside comfortably, but more importantly, they will continue to benefit the community even after the festival.
A Festival Combining Tourism, Culture, Business and Entertainment
The 2025 edition is designed as a multi-district event along Lake Kivu, but Rutsiro’s segment has drawn particular attention due to its unique tourism appeal such as islands, steep green hills, scenic beaches and vibrant local culture.
The program in Rutsiro includes a 20 kilometre hiking trail starting from Palega Beach Inn, sports activities including beach volleyball, badminton at KaySun Hotel, swimming competitions and boat races. A Boat Party on Lake Kivu is scheduled for December 13 and 14. Visitors will also tour Inyambo cattle swimming in the lake, Napoleon Island, coffee farms and biodiversity viewing areas in Boneza. An expo zone will showcase Made in Rwanda products, crafts, agribusiness and local commerce.

Hotels and Lakeside Facilities Undergo Final Improvements
Hospitality operators around Palega Beach Inn, Bugarura Island and Boneza have been renovating rooms, gardens and waterfront spaces to accommodate the expected surge in visitors. On Bugarura Island, which is home to more than 2,000 residents, the community says the festival provides long-awaited visibility and opportunities to generate income through transport services, crafts and food supplies.
While the Kivu Beach Expo and Festival will run for one week, the infrastructure upgrades are expected to deliver long-term benefits. Better roads, improved accommodation facilities and increased visibility could attract future investors, tour operators and repeat tourism.
